In mid 19’s CDNOW and Amazon both started their affiliates programs. Where affiliates would put a link on their own web page so visitors could be redirected to CDNOW or Amazon’s website. The affiliates would than receive a compensation for linking the products.
Affiliate networks became very popular afterwards, and is now is now part of a lot of e-commerce advertising and business plan.
